1
Loft
/lɒft/
(n.) a room or space directly under the roof of a house or other building, used for accommodation or storage.
"the best way to prevent this heat loss is by insulating the loft"
2
Mezzanine
/ˈmɛtsəniːn,ˈmɛzəniːn/
(n.) a low storey between two others in a building, typically between the ground and first floors.
"a mezzanine floor"
What is the difference between a loft and a mezzanine? In the industry, the terms are typically used interchangeably as both have very similar features in which they are built a level up in an existing space of a room. However, according to the definitions from Oxford Languages dictionary, a loft is a room that’s built directly under a roof — the result of that is that you usually see a roof-shaped ceiling in a typical loft. Whilst on the other hand, a mezzanine is usually an intermediate floor that is situated in a double ceiling height space, accessible from the floor below and does not extend all the way to cover the whole floor space of the building. With these definitions now clear in our minds, keep reading to see 7 interesting lofts in homes we have built.
Having a vision of how the place should look and then coming together with our highly experienced designer, Cadine, this shophouse apartment at Joo Chiat that was once completely bare with a leaking roof and many cracks on the walls was transformed into a modern luxe apartment with a stylish loft master bedder to boot. It was almost a given to build a loft due to its massive ceiling height, the unique downward slopes of the roof-shaped ceiling, and attractive-looking wooden beams to reinforce the structure of the roof in place. All in all giving the space a unique characteristic that was in turn played to an advantage with clever design of the space.
People who love dark colors need not worry about potentially drowning the light out of a space or spending heaps amounts on electricity to ensure lighting is adequate in a dark-toned space. The solution to this? Pair dark colors with lighter or neutral tones to bounce some natural lighting back into your dark luxe space. This is done here via juxtaposing light greys with darker greys, use of white ceilings and light woods on the step and string of the stairs, and with bold, graphic mosaic tiles applied to each of the riser surface on the staircase.

In this one bedroom loft/studio unit at Thomson V, the extra ceiling height of the living room is used to the advantage of building a mezzanine library that is situated conveniently within reach in the area of the living space — a precious nook when spaces in new homes these days are getting increasingly compact and scarce. The design of the space itself is bright and airy with a hint of scandinavian decor fused with industrial elements brought about by the studio lighting look paired against the black steel frames of the mezzanine platform, stairway railings, as well as that matching and cozy home-shaped frame that defines and add a eclectic design touch to the living room space.

Situated in the living room of this 3-bedder condominium apartment — this mini loft leads to a mini library for the kids to explore and play within close proximity while their parents are lounging in the living room watching tv. How this was achieved was by building a steel structure mezzanine that’s powder coated in black and equipped with a ladder to climb up and down the mini loft that's painted in a striking red shade.

An office loft was built directly under the roof of this semi-detached house in Begonia Road. With an appropriate amount of ceiling height, the roof’s downward sloping shape can be a desirable feature of a space — thus, the designers at Prozfile decided to make a stairway leading to the home office loft in the master bedroom itself.
After donning the wall with vintage bricks, the floors are also laid with engineered timber in a light wood shade. The steps of the stairway are illuminated with LED lighting strips against a high contrast look of black fittings against white laminated surfaces. What’s more, underneath the stairs are additional storage space for things — the perfect solution to adding much needed bright and space saving ideas for any home.

Behind the master bedroom headboard of this condo apartment is a loft space that functions as a mini entertainment area where the homeowner can watch TV and unwind at the end of the day. This idea was devised as there are other family members in the household that can watch the other TV in the living room. Also, having a television placed directly away from the bed minimizes distraction before bedtime — a perfect solution for those who tend to have trouble falling asleep.
